What is Venapro?

Misleading Claims: Do Not Believe Everything You Read About Venapro
One of the things that I was rather disheartened by in researching this product were unscrupulous marketers who made claims that were blatantly misleading. For example, you might have seen something to the effect that you one be “self-assured in their buy and consumption of this technique of treating hemorrhoids” because it is FDA approved.
The problem with this statement is the FDA only approved it in that it met their general good manufacturing guidelines. Ordinarily the FDA does not actually test the safety and efficacy of natural products because they are not new man-made molecules which carry greater risks.
Occassionally when concerns about a naturally-derived product they will take proactive action against it, like with ephedrine. However, in most cases herbal products are sold without the long term multi-center randomized, double-blinded placebo-controlled trials necessary to prove efficacy and provide more conclusive safety data. What about clinical studies on this product?
I have yet to find any reliable clinical studies on this particular product. I do see reference to a study on various sites which claims that out of 100 people who took the drug there was a “97% good results rate,” whatever that means, with 90% “enjoying healthful relief.” I cannot find any detailed abstract on the study or even a reference to it at the company’s website, and without the details I have no idea how to interpret it.
I assume based on the description that there was no control group. You see, there is the effect known as the “placebo effect” whereas if people think they are taking something that works, the symptoms will get better. Often you will see sugar pills magically helping people, particularly if you are looking at an outcome that is very subjective, like how much pain one is feeling. Given that many cases of hemmorhoids resolve themselves after a couple of days, there is even more reason to take with some degree of skepticism a non-placebo controlled study.
So does that mean this does not work?
No, it just means the definitive studies appear not to have been done yet. However, there has been much examination of the individual ingredients in this treatment over the years. Unfortunately, much of this research happens to be anecdotal as well, and not conclusive as such studies are prohibitively expensive unless one has the big budget of a large pharmaceutical company. For this reason these studies tend to be done only on patented molecules.
What is the best evidence that this works?
Homeopathic medicine has a long history. People over the centuries have noted that certain plants tend to help those with certain ailments, and those discoveries are passed down over the years. On the other hand, there are many of these ingredients that are taken internally through teas or simple ingestion and are widely believed by various naturopaths to be effective. For example, cayenne pepper is an ingredient included that Dr. Christopher of the School of Natural Healing believed to be quite effective against hemorrhoids. I know someone who studied under Dr. Christopher who is able to do some really amazing things through the herbals techniques she learned, including successfully treating herself for a deadly form of MRSA without pharmaceuticals. As a result I have a lot of respect for homeopathy in general.
